Gardening at Stone Camp is an eternal work in progress and learning. We are far from expert gardeners. There was no tillable soil when we arrived. Over the years gardening here evolved from a tiny raised bed to a huge bulldozed dry lake bed filled with 14 dump truck loads and an additional 35 tons of top soil delivered. There is also a medium sized garden whose soil was built from scratch.
It has been calculated that if cut off from Taco Bell, the local food co-op and the local grocery we could easily survive on a basic Mexican peasants diet. We have a small orchard, vineyard of grapes and hearty Kiwis and grow several kinds of berries. All of this has been and is supplemented by foraging for nuts, wild berries, edible mushrooms and plants.
